Kingsbrook is pleased to announce the sale of GP Update Ltd, trading as Red Whale, to the Medical Defence Union (MDU) group of companies.
Red Whale is a leading CPD education provider for GPs and other primary care clinicians. The company is well-known and trusted for creating evidence-based, unique learning content for clinicians to fulfil their mandatory CPD requirements and optimise patient care. The company teaches approximately 25,000 delegates a year, from GPs to primary health care team members.
Red Whale provides both online and face-to-face courses, using practical and accessible formats that are proven to create high levels of engagement. The business has built up an extensive library of learning material, providing the opportunity to provide a subscription revenue stream
The MDU is the UK’s leading not-for-profit medical defence organisation, supporting over 200,000 members with a wide variety of medico-legal problems such as a complaints handling, coroner’s inquiries and ethical issues. The company is led and staffed by doctors with unparalleled expertise in medico-legal issues, complaints and claims.
John Pritchard, Lead Advisor on the project, said of the deal:
“Red Whale is a unique, well-run business that we were excited to take to market. Martin Haley, the incumbent CEO of Red Whale was enthusiastic and extremely well organised, which helped make the process run smoothly, particularly in due diligence. We received high levels of interest, but it was obvious that the MDU was the right fit. The synergies between the two companies were apparent from the first meeting, and offer significant future opportunities for both Red Whale and the MDU.”
Dr Matthew Lee, MDU chief executive, said:
“Red Whale has an exceptional reputation for the quality and depth of its educational courses. This is an exciting time for both organisations. By bringing together our extensive expertise and experience, we will be in a stronger position to support clinicians with the challenges ahead.”
Dr Caroline Greene, new CEO of Red Whale, said:
“I am delighted that Red Whale has found a home at the MDU, an organisation that shares our values. We look forward to working as a distinct company within the MDU group, to continue supporting the educational needs of colleagues in primary care.”
The deal was completed in October 2023
