The MDU is the UK’s leading not-for-profit medical defence organisation, supporting over 200,000 members  with a wide variety of medico-legal problems such as a complaints handling, coroner’s inquiries and ethical issues. The company is led and staffed by doctors with unparalleled expertise in medico-legal issues, complaints and claims.

John Pritchard, Lead Advisor on the project, said of the deal:

“Red Whale is a unique, well-run business that we were excited to take to market. Martin Haley, the incumbent CEO of Red Whale was enthusiastic and extremely well organised, which helped make the process run smoothly, particularly in due diligence. We received high levels of interest, but it was obvious that the MDU was the right fit. The synergies between the two companies were apparent from the first meeting, and offer significant future opportunities for both Red Whale and the MDU.”

Dr Matthew Lee, MDU chief executive, said:

“Red Whale has an exceptional reputation for the quality and depth of its educational courses. This is an exciting time for both organisations. By bringing together our extensive expertise and experience, we will be in a stronger position to support clinicians with the challenges ahead.”

Dr Caroline Greene, new CEO of Red Whale, said:

“I am delighted that Red Whale has found a home at the MDU, an organisation that shares our values. We look forward to working as a distinct company within the MDU group, to continue supporting the educational needs of colleagues in primary care.”

The deal was completed in October 2023
